Abandon Hope Mabel Dorothy
Location: Parish Hall, Trinity
BY WAYNE MACPHAIL
Abandon Hope Mabel Dorothy is a story of family, belonging, and a journey for love.
A man in his mid 30s, adopted as a baby and taken from Newfoundland, returns to a small resettled community near the town of Grand Bank in search of a family he believes rejected him when his father was lost at sea and his mother died. The journalist in him investigates the mystery of how his father’s ship disappeared.
Meanwhile the embittered and troubled soul in him searches for a sense of who he came from and for a place he barely knows. It is a play about discovery, yearning, and redemption. It is, above all, a beautiful and uplifting tale of confronting the pain of regret and separation, and embracing the future with understanding and forgiveness.

Terese's Creed
Location: Parish Hall, Trinity
BY MICHAEL COOK
Terese’s Creed is a tribute to the women of Newfoundland and Labrador who, through hard work, humour and indomitable spirit, survived the good times and the bad in small outports in the early 1960’s. Find Terese at her old wringer washer and eavesdrop as she talks to herself about her fisherman husband, her kids and a time passed but much missed. She’ll make you laugh and she’ll make you cry-she might even make you wring out the laundry.

The Thin Place
BY COLE HAYLEY
LOCATION: MAIN SPACE - RISING TIDE
DIRECTED BY LUKE ROWE
The damage of resettlement to rural Newfoundland has been well documented, but the trauma felt within family units of those who had to go through the process, and the generational strain since, has not been as openly discussed. The Thin Place exists squarely in the latter, as Terra and her family are lost at sea in their saltbox house, where their one-hour trek across the bay has turned into a lazy river through purgatory. Winner of the 2023 Emerging Playwrights Award from the Playwrights Guild of Canada, and winner of the 2022 Arts & Letters Award.

It’s 5 am in the cove and David and Millie Brake are on the brink of divorce. David is a pipe fitter working in Fort McMurray, gone for weeks at a time. Millie is his “oil widow” trying to make sense of her life in a changing rural landscape as she deals with a family tragedy. She is a spitfire with a sharp tongue, laced with generations of black Newfoundland wit and when she finds out Dave is having an affair it is all she can do not to cleave him in two. An examination of the “new” Newfoundland identity the play still poses the question- what is it that keeps us in love with this place we call home.
